Paying for your car

An open notebook, a pen, a car key, a blank yellow sticky note and a phone on a white desk

Finance is available on cars from Holmes Motor Wholesale. Ask us about it when you enquire about a car, or send a finance enquiry using the form on this page. You're just as welcome to pay with your own money or with a loan you've arranged yourself.

Three ways to pay

  • Your own money. Pay from savings, or put savings and a trade-in together.
  • Your own lender. Already have a pre-approval from your bank, credit union or another lender? Tell us when you enquire. Once you've chosen a car, we'll give your lender the details it needs, such as the car's VIN and price.
  • Ask us about finance. Send us a finance enquiry and we'll get back to you to talk about the car and how you'd like to pay.

How a finance enquiry works

  1. Fill in the form on this page. It asks for your name and contact details and, if you like, a rough budget, a deposit and when you'd like to buy.
  2. We get back to you to talk about the car you're interested in and how you'd like to pay.
  3. Any loan is between you and the lender. The lender assesses your application and decides whether to approve it, and on what terms.

A finance enquiry is not a credit application.

Before you apply for any car loan

  • Set a budget that covers registration, insurance, fuel, servicing and tyres, not just the repayments.
  • Compare loans by their comparison rate, not just the interest rate.
  • Ask about fees: establishment fees, monthly account fees and any fee for paying the loan off early.
  • Check for a balloon payment. It lowers the repayments but leaves a lump sum to pay at the end.
  • A pre-approval is usually conditional. The lender will still check the car and your details before the loan is final.
  • Read the contract before you sign, and keep a copy.

Finance questions

Contact us
Is finance available?
Yes, finance is available. Ask us about it when you get in touch about a car. Asking us about finance is an enquiry, not a credit application, and any loan is up to the lender to approve. You're also welcome to use your own lender.
Can I use my own finance or pre-approval?
Yes. If you have a pre-approval from your bank or lender, tell us when you get in touch. Once you've chosen a car, we'll give your lender the details it needs, such as the car's VIN and price. A pre-approval isn't a final approval: your lender still has to approve the loan for the car you choose.
How do I pay for a car?
Once you've chosen a car, we'll go through how you'd like to pay, including using your own finance or a trade-in. Before you transfer any money, confirm the account details with us directly, not by replying to an email or text. Scammers sometimes send fake bank details that way, and Scamwatch explains how to spot this at scamwatch.gov.au.
Can I pay a deposit to hold a car?
Ask us about the car you're interested in. Before you pay any deposit, ask what it covers and whether it's refundable, and get the answer in writing. In Queensland, if you sign a contract with a licensed motor dealer and end it during the cooling-off period, the dealer can keep no more than $100.
Will asking about finance affect my credit score?
Sending us an enquiry isn't a credit application. When you apply for a loan, the lender will usually check your credit report, and the application is usually listed on it. Moneysmart explains credit reports and scores at moneysmart.gov.au.
What is a comparison rate?
A comparison rate combines a loan's interest rate with most of its fees and charges in one figure, so loans are easier to compare. It's worked out on a set loan amount and term, so your own cost can differ. Moneysmart explains how to use it at moneysmart.gov.au.
What does a lender usually ask for?
Most lenders ask for proof of identity, such as a driver licence, proof of income, such as recent payslips, and details of your expenses and debts. Your lender will tell you exactly what it needs.
